Poonam Mahajan’s Maiden Speech in Lok Sabha

Smt. Poonam Mahajan, Member of Parliament from Mumbai North Central and National Secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party delivered her maiden speech as part of the discussion on the Union Budget 2014-15.

Ms. Mahajan began by reminding the opposition benches about the legacy of the UPA Government, which brought the GDP growth rate from 8.4% in 2003-04 to 4.8% in 2013-14. She thanked the current Government, Prime Minister and Finance Minister for presenting a budget aimed at getting the country’s economy back on track.

“We have been speaking for so many years on the issue of fiscal deficit, with this budget, our finance minister has brought in fiscal discipline. We do not have a magic wand to fix the economy, but our Finance Minister has put a whip on the treasury and will ensure that fiscal discipline will be exercised.”

She spoke on the importance of the manufacturing sector and thanked the Finance Minister for ensuring that Medium and Small scale manufacturers are given incentive in the budget. Apart from which, she also touched upon the issues of housing, inclusive banking and affordable housing.

The North- Eastern states of India were given a focus in the Budget. Ms. Mahajan took cognizance of the special focus and expressed her gratefulness to the Finance Minister for the same.

Ms. Mahajan praised the Government’s ‘Statue of Unity’ initiative and reinstated that it is essential to pay adequate respect to the man who united India, Sardar Vallabhai Patel.

As a young, woman parliamentarian Ms. Mahajan eloquently raised the issues of the youth and women. The Budget has provided for multiple schemes and initiatives to ensure the overall development of women. Apart from which, the young pulse of the country has been acknowledge and budgetary provisions have been accordingly made to empower the youth.

“In entirety, I am happy and proud of the Budget that has been presented by the Finance Minister. However, while I support the Budget, I have a suggestion to make. The financial capital of India, one that contributes a considerable GDP to the country as a whole, Mumbai has not received enough attention in this Budget”.

Ms. Mahajan elaborated on the Mumbai spirit that defines the city. The city has experienced every thing from bomb blasts to monsoon flooding, yet it is always back on its feet and back to work. The city of Mumbai is every growing and requires special attention. Ms. Mahajan stressed that if India has to grow, Mumbai has to grow. The issues of Mumbai’s Mithi River, its rising skyline which requires a revision in CRZ rules were raised.

“Mumbai is the original big city, while this Budget has allocated a sufficient amount to the creation of smart cities across the country, Mumbai needs more funds to improve its transport and housing infrastructure.” said Ms. Mahajan.
